Treating autoimmune hepatitis holistically – more than just medication

Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic inflammation of the liver in which the immune system turns against its own liver cells. It is considered an autoimmune disease and mainly affects women, but can also affect men and children. If it is recognized early, its course can usually be influenced well – especially if conventional medicine and holistic approaches are combined.

What happens with autoimmune hepatitis?

In this disease, the immune system mistakenly classifies parts of the liver as “foreign” and attacks them. This leads to permanent inflammation, which can damage the liver tissue over time. Without treatment, the risk of liver fibrosis or cirrhosis – i.e. increasing hardening and functional impairment of the liver – increases.

What symptoms can occur?

The disease often begins gradually. Typical symptoms are

• Persistent tiredness and exhaustion
• Pressure or pain in the right upper abdomen
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes
• Loss of appetite, dark urine, pale stools
• Joint pain or fever

In some cases, the disease is initially asymptomatic and only becomes apparent during a blood test.

Conventional medical treatment – an important component

Conventional treatment usually consists of so-called immunosuppressants – drugs that slow down the overactive immune system. The aim is to bring the inflammation under control and protect the liver. The dosage is adjusted individually and monitored regularly.

Holistic support – incorporating body, mind and lifestyle

Holistic treatment of autoimmune hepatitis goes beyond medication. It looks at the person as a whole – including their diet, emotional stress, stress levels and lifestyle.
Important holistic aspects:

• Liver-friendly diet: fresh, wholesome foods, low sugar, no alcohol exposure
• Stress reduction: e.g. through mindfulness, meditation, yoga or breathing exercises
• Exercise: regular, moderate activity has an anti-inflammatory effect and strengthens the psyche
• Psycho-emotional support: conversations, therapies or exchanges in self-help groups can help to cope better with the diagnosis
• Naturopathic support: in consultation with doctors, certain herbal remedies or micronutrients can be used as a supplement

Toxopheresis – when more support is needed

Toxopheresis can be used in more severe or particularly acute cases. The blood is filtered through a special device that filters out certain pathogenic environmental toxins and circulating immune complexes. It is used specifically when medication alone is not sufficient.

Living with the disease – consciously and actively

Autoimmune hepatitis requires mindfulness, but it doesn’t have to be an obstacle to a fulfilling life. With the right combination of medical treatment, lifestyle adjustments and emotional support, many sufferers can lead a stable and active life. Holistic approaches help to focus not only on the disease, but also on their own well-being.
