Vitiligo – When the skin loses its color: Holistic understanding and support
21. July 2025
Vitiligo – commonly known as white spot disease – is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the pigment-forming cells of the skin (melanocytes) are destroyed. The result is sharply defined, light-colored spots on the skin, which often appear symmetrically. The hands, face, genital area or joints are frequently affected. Although vitiligo is usually not physically painful, it can be psychologically distressing – especially if the spots are clearly visible.
Causes: More than just a skin problem
From a holistic perspective, vitiligo is not seen as an isolated skin problem, but as an expression of an imbalanced immune system. Possible triggers or intensifiers are chronic stress, hormonal changes, environmental toxins, certain medications, nutrient deficiencies (e.g. zinc, vitamin B12) or even a disturbed intestinal flora. Genetic factors also play a role, but they alone do not explain when or why the disease becomes active.
Focus on body, mind and environment
Holistic approaches focus on looking at the person as a whole. The aim is to regulate the immune system, reduce inflammation and identify possible triggers. This often involves a low-inflammatory diet, micronutrient therapy, stress reduction (e.g. through meditation or breathing exercises), intestinal reconstruction and a critical examination of environmental pollution. The psychological component also deserves attention – vitiligo often affects self-esteem. A mindful approach to oneself can be decisive here.
Toxopheresis – a modern approach to blood purification
One therapeutic approach is toxopheresis. This is a special blood purification procedure that aims to filter disease-promoting substances such as autoantibodies, inflammatory messengers and environmental toxins from the blood. The idea behind it: If the “information flow” of the immune system is relieved, the body can regulate itself better again. Toxopheresis is currently only offered in specialized clinics, centers and private practices.
Conclusion: Don’t just start on the surface
Vitiligo shows on the skin – but it starts deeper. If you are prepared to take a holistic view of your body and lifestyle, you can find new ways to positively influence the course of the disease. Even if the spots do not always disappear, a lot can be gained: a better quality of life, a strengthened immune system – and the feeling of being able to influence your own well-being again.
