Root-treated teeth: an underestimated risk to overall health?

28. April 2025

Root canal treatments are among the most common dental procedures and are performed to save a tooth whose nerves and blood vessels have been irreversibly damaged by inflammation or caries. But while the tooth often remains painless after treatment, more and more experts in holistic medicine are asking questions about the long-term effects of root canal teeth on the whole body. Why could root-treated teeth be a health risk, and how can this affect our well-being?

What happens during a root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment removes the infected or dead pulp (pulp). The resulting cavity is cleaned, disinfected and then sealed with a filler. The aim of treatment is to preserve the tooth and prevent further infection.

Even if the root canal is functional and relieves pain, the tooth remains dead – it has no living nerves or blood vessels. This means that it is no longer able to regenerate itself or activate defence mechanisms against bacteria.

The danger behind…

Hidden bacteria and toxins:

Although the tooth may appear intact from the outside, tiny micro-channels in the interior of the tooth can provide shelter for bacteria. These bacteria can settle in the fine branches of the root canal system, where they cannot be completely removed even by the most thorough cleaning and disinfection.

In the encapsulated interior of the teeth, bacteria can grow and produce toxins that enter the body and can trigger a chronic inflammatory reaction. These inflammations are often not noticeable, but can strain the immune system for years.

Toxic reactions by the filling material:

After the removal of the tooth pulp, the cavity is sealed with fillers. Some studies suggest that certain fillers may release chemical substances that are potentially toxic and have a negative impact on health.

How can you minimize the risk?

Holistic dental care:
Holistic dentists often rely on alternatives to traditional root canal treatment. This includes biocompatible materials and methods that are less stressful for the body.

Some dentists also advise removing root-treated teeth and using biocompatible implants or other dental replacement solutions that pose less health risks.

Prevention through good oral hygiene:
As with any dental treatment, thorough oral hygiene plays a central role.
