Guillain-Barré syndrome – a holistic view: When the nervous system gets out of balance
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is one of the rarer neurological diseases, but it has a profound impact on the lives of those affected. From a holistic perspective, it is a sign that the natural balance in the body has been disturbed – particularly in the interaction between the immune system and the nervous system.
GBS often begins after an infection. The immune system overreacts and suddenly turns against the body’s own nerve structures. Those affected report a gradual onset: tingling, numbness or increasing weakness in the arms or legs. In some cases, the symptoms develop within a few days, in others over a period of months.
Acute or chronic – two ways of developing a derailment
The acute form is the best known: muscle strength decreases within a short period of time, sometimes to such an extent that movement or even breathing becomes difficult. Rapid medical intervention is particularly important here in order to calm the immune system down again.
In contrast, the chronic form – also known as CIDP – manifests itself slowly and in waves. The symptoms come on gradually, but can be just as stressful. In this case, long-term support can help to stabilize the body and nervous system.
Holistic ways to provide support
From a holistic perspective, it is not just about drug treatment, but about strengthening the whole person – physically, emotionally and mentally. In addition to conventional medical procedures such as immunoglobulins or anti-inflammatory medication, toxopheresis (plasmapheresis) can also be used. This involves filtering the blood plasma to remove harmful substances that contribute to immune system dysfunction. This can be helpful in acute phases to provide the body with relief.
In addition, gentle therapies from naturopathy or Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), such as acupuncture, herbal support, an anti-inflammatory diet and targeted exercise therapy can help to harmonize body and mind. Breathing exercises, mindfulness and stress reduction are also important components – because stress can put additional strain on the immune system.
Life in balance despite diagnosis
A disease like GBS challenges you to find new ways of self-care. It’s about taking good care of yourself, being mindful of your body and actively supporting it. Even if the path is often not straightforward, many people report that they gain stability and new strength over time.
Holistic support can help you regain confidence in your own body – and discover new mobility, energy and quality of life step by step.
