Familial homozygous hypercholesterolemia – Understanding and treating it holistically
Familial homozygous hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) is a rare, genetic disease in which LDL cholesterol (also known as “bad” cholesterol) is significantly elevated – often from birth. Without treatment, deposits can form in blood vessels as early as childhood, which can lead to serious cardiovascular disease. But how can this complex disease be treated not only symptomatically, but also holistically?
What does “holistic” mean?
In holistic medicine, we look at people not just through the lens of laboratory values and symptoms, but in their entire context – with body, mind and environment interacting. This means that in addition to standard pharmacological therapy such as statins, PCSK9 inhibitors or lipid apheresis, attention is also paid to diet, lifestyle, mental health, environmental stress and detoxification.
Diet and micronutrients
A diet consistently low in cholesterol is usually not enough for HoFH, but can still have a supportive effect. It is important to work on an individually tailored basis here – e.g. through a plant-based diet with a focus on omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and antioxidants. Micronutrients such as coenzyme Q10, magnesium and vitamin K2 can provide additional protection for the cardiovascular system.
Toxopheresis – cleansing at a molecular level
Toxopheresis, a form of extracorporeal blood purification, is an innovative approach in integrative therapy. It not only removes excess LDL cholesterol, but also environmental toxins, heavy metals and inflammatory mediators from the blood. Toxopheresis can be a valuable addition, particularly in the case of genetic diseases such as HoFH, where conventional medication often reaches its limits – especially in the case of simultaneous toxic exposure to the environment or chronic inflammation.
Conclusion
HoFH is a serious disease – no question about it. But with a holistic approach that combines medical innovation with natural and emotional-spiritual therapies, a new quality of life and stability can be achieved. The combination of conventional medicine and integrative procedures such as toxopheresis offers hope – and above all: individual solutions for individual people.
