Behçet’s disease: When chemotherapy reaches its limits
Behçet’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disease in which the immune system overreacts. Recurrent ulcers in the mouth and genital area, skin rashes, eye inflammation and, in severe cases, vascular or brain involvement are typical. The disease progresses in episodes and is difficult to predict.
When medication no longer works
In severe cases, medication that suppresses the immune system is often used – including chemotherapy drugs. These can slow down inflammation, but sometimes have considerable side effects: nausea, infections or liver damage are not uncommon. There are also people for whom the therapy has little effect – a stressful situation that makes new approaches necessary.
Holistic approaches as a supplement
More and more sufferers are also looking for ways that go beyond medication. Holistic approaches look not only at the disease, but also at the entire lifestyle – from nutrition and stress management to mental health. The aim is not only to relieve the body, but also to deal better with the disease in everyday life.
Toxopheresis: Blood Purification as a Special Treatment Option
Toxopheresis is a specialized procedure that may be considered in severe cases. In this process, blood is separated from the plasma and filtered outside the body to remove pro-inflammatory substances. Unlike conventional medications, this approach aims to relieve the immune system without excessively suppressing it. Initial experience has shown positive effects, particularly in situations where other therapies have failed.
Better quality of life despite the disease
Behçet’s disease is complex – and often a major burden. But when conventional approaches reach their limits, it is worth taking a holistic view. Complementary measures, individual care and expert exchange can help to find new stability and quality of life – even without focusing solely on medication.
