Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common functional bowel disorders. What is behind irritable bowel syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome is not a purely physical illness in the classic sense. Rather, it is a disorder in the interaction between the gut, nervous system and psyche. The so-called gut-brain axis plays a central role here: it describes the close connection between the digestive tract and the central nervous system. Stress, emotional strain or anxiety can directly influence bowel function – and vice versa.

The importance of nutrition

Food intolerances or disturbed intestinal flora are common in many irritable bowel syndrome sufferers. Even if the triggers vary from person to person, some patterns can be recognized.
